Application of bird-strike verified analysis for the design of fast helicopter composite cowling

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the approach for design cowlings a new fast helicopter from perspective airworthiness requirements regarding high-speed impact resistance. Design/methodology/approach Validated numerical simulation was applied flat and simple curved test panels. High-speed camera measurement non-destructive testing (NDT) results were used verification models. final optimized verified by validated simulation. Findings comparison between based on static material properties with experimental load shows no significant influence strain rate effect in composite material. Research limitations/implications Owing sensitivity technology production, are limited production technology. Practical implications application panels calibration models allows cowling reduces risk structural non-compliance during tests. Originality/value Numerical real structure NDT inspection after impact. proposed model simplified complex reduced calculation time.
